From: Marietta Georgia I haven't filed for 98, 99, or 00 yet. I am a W2 employee that has had several jobs throughout the past three years, I have the information I need to file for 98 (FEDERAL), but I have incomplete information for 99. I need to get my earnings information for 99, from my current employer for 99 for federal. My question is how much of a penalty can I be charged for not filing if I owe to state, and how can I get the earning and deduction information from the state I reside in for previous years? Please help. This has been on my mind for the past few weeks, constantly!!! Jeffrey Hi Jeffrey, Goodness, this could make you totally crazy. It's not that hard to handle, though. Really! You can find IRS forms for 1998 here And 1999 forms here And the last several years worth of Georgia Forms here. In order to get your information for both 1998 and 1999 use Form 4506. (I know, you have it. But as long as you haven't filed yet, you may as well make sure you have all the info you need before you prepare your return.) Check off Box 8c - to get copies of your W-2s (and attach a note requesting any 1099s that were also filed). In Box 11, enter 1998 and 1999. This will take care of IRS. However, it will not give you your withholding amounts for the Georgia taxes. You may want to call them and ask if they have a similar form - or can they just handle the request by telephone? Telephone numbers here. As to the penalties .... well, if you're a W-2 employee, chances are that you had enough withholding to cover your taxes. If that's the case - and you don't live in California (don't even ask) - you will have no penalties. But do file right away so you don't lose any of your refunds. They become uncollectible three years after the due date of the original return. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg |
