Can I Count the Ways » From: San Francisco, CA Dear TaxMama, What is the difference between City, County & state taxes? Do I have to pay 3 taxes for the assets I have in my business? Thank you in advance. Ava Dear Ava, Sad, sad, sad ... pretty much, every one wants a piece of you. Typically, the City taxes you on your business license. Here is contact information for the City of San Francisco Usually, the county taxes you on your property - real estate, business equipment, inventories, etc. In your case, the City and County of San Francisco have but one website - you may want to call the licensing folks and ask them about any county taxes for which you might be responsible. And then there's our lovely Golden State government - they want income taxes, sales taxes, payroll taxes, excise taxes,... they may even be your licensing agency, depending on your profession (CPA, building contractors, cosmeticians, etc.) (Even if you appear to be paying your payroll taxes to the Employment Development Department, it ultimately comes under the jurisdiction of FTB and State Board of Equalization.) Does this give you a running start? More than you ever wanted to know? Good luck! Eva Rosenberg Your TaxMama |
