IRS Malfunctions?
» From: Redondo Beach, CA
Dear TaxMama:
Have I got a good one for you.
I got a letter from the IRS telling me that they adjusted my
return because I calculated my Child tax credit wrong.
To make a long story short, my tax pro took about an hour on
the phone with the IRS explaining to them that their computer
has it wrong. I will be getting my $280 or whatever the number
is back, but the scary thing is that the IRS phone people are
so sure that they are right.
If my tax preparer was not so sure that she got it right, or
if any non professional called, I am sure that the IRS would
have kept their money.
After all, when they tell a lay person that the computer says
this is how it is done, we will assume that they know best.
It turns out that their computer has it wrong, but they will not
go back and review all the returns to fix this. I smell class
action lawsuit here. Imagine if there are millions of people
shorted a few hundred dollars!
Anyone want to run with this?
Brad
Dear Brad,
Dontcha hate when that happens?
Good for you and your pro for pursuing it!
But let's not jump to the courts just yet, OK?
Actually, when something like that happens to my clients,
I let IRS know there's something wrong with their system.
Believe it or not, they do fix it - without lawsuits.
Shocking, isn't it?
If you want to send me the notice and an outline of what was
wrong, (I may also need a copy of the first two page of your
return) I can bring it to the attention of the Taxpayer Advocate,
and/or District Director and let them know there is a systemic
problem.
Best wishes,
Eva Rosenberg
