» From: Paris, France Dear TaxMama: I am filing my taxes from Europe. They are due by June 17th. Do the state and federal tax depts have to receive them by the 17th, or just be post-marked by the 17th? The reason I ask is that I have PO Box address for the CA tax return and I am afraid if I send it DHL it will be returned. Thank you. Karen Dear Karen, Don't worry about California. You have an automatic, paperless extension until October 15th. So, just send it in. And if you're the least bit concerned about IRS getting it in time - just send in an extension, Form 4868 Technically, your tax return only has to be postmarked on the correct date for it to be valid. Although, I'll admit that I have had battles with certain Service Centers that rejected extensions because they 'received' them after the due date. But, case law (the courts) are consistently on the side of 'mailed' date. Don't worry though, being an international filer, you should be filing with IRS in Philadelphia. Those folks generally do a great job. If, on the other hand, you are filing in Ogden, because your permanent address is in California,...you should be OK with them, too. They ought to have experience, considering the number of celebrities and consultants who must file from overseas when they are working. Have fun! Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg Your TaxMama |
