Inept Tax Assessor

Dear TaxMama:

The town I own a condo in has reviewed it's tax reveivable books for 1991 to 1995. It is telling me I owe taxes from 1993. Seems they credited someones else payment to my property.

I don't keep paper records for more than 7 years so have no way of proving I did or did not make this payment.

Is there a statute of limitation on this?

Faye

Hi Faye,

Aaaah, this is from your town, not your condo association.

How interesting. I don't know. You'll have to do some digging and some research in your town's laws and ordinances. But, no doubt, you are not the only person they've done this to.

If they were to go to court on a business that did this, in general, the judge would throw them out for such irresponsible bookkeeping. But a town ....?

Do you know what I would do with something like that? I'd call up the local TV or radio station's consumer advocate and have them look into this. This is news.

Best wishes,

Eva Rosenberg
