Tax ID

Dear TaxMama:

I am planning on starting my business on ebay. I will be selling designer handbags or video games. I am not quite sure which one yet.

But my question is, some wholesalers won't do business with me unless I have a business tax ID. So, for state of California, do I need a Business Tax ID?

Also, what other license do I need to set my business up properly?

Thanks for your help.

Mabel

Dear Mabel,

What they're looking for is a Sales Tax ID #. You get those from the State Board of Equalization.

You'll find the application online

You'll also find publications with the rules and procedures.

If you have specific questions, go ahead and call them. They are really good with my stupid questions.

For some consumer-related things, you may need certain licenses.

In general though, you WILL need a City of Los Angeles business license.

You may need an (IRS) Federal ID number.

I'd really recommend that if you want to be sure to do this right, you do sit down for an hour with a good local tax pro and have them help you with all the registrations, and guide you through the business.

If you need a recommendation, I am sure I know good tax professionals close to you.

Best wishes,
