Claiming Daughter

From: Perth Amboy, NJ

Dear TaxMama,

My girlfriend and I both claim our daughter as a dependant with our employers. Is that legal?

She will be claiming her this year on her tax return.

I claimed her the past two years.

Tom

Dear Tom,

No one really cares what you claim with your employer, as long as you don't claim more than 9 total exemptions.

It's only what happens on your tax return that matters. Then, only ONE of you should be claiming your daughter.

Best wishes,
Eva Rosenberg, MBA, EA
