You're holding up other people.] Dear Family, My mother just called. She's all upset because I have just become a toll call for her, and she can't call me without a lot of trouble. (I've been in the same place, with the same phone number for over 10 years, as has she.) It turns out, my sweet, foolish nephew, her grandson, has gotten involved in some phone service thing. (I don't know which one.) But he has taken a simple thing, something that was working fine all these years - and turned it into an expensive, inconvenient hardship for this fixed income little old lady. Her phone bill has increased dramatically. And it's become more difficult for her to complete her calls outside of her immediate area. (I don't know why - but, she's more stressed than I've seen her in years.) OK, calling me won't be a problem any longer. After all, Mom can simply use my 800 number all the time. If she remembers to do it. (She hasn't. This is the third time she's called me all upset about the toll call thing.) My friends, please think carefully before you let your kids switch phone services for elderly people. I know it seems like a little thing to you, (and I know they don't make THAT much money on the switch) but it can completely disorient some people. Not all - some people's minds stay totally sharp as they get older. It's just their bodies that make life miserable. But, really, I have seen perfectly fine, lucid, competent people, when something changes in their routine ... it's all over - it almost seems to trigger whatever dormant Alzheimers thing is in their system. (I have seen this happen to three people. And it scares the heck out of me, watching helplessly, not being able to stop the progression once it starts.) So, whatever it is - when you're dealing with seniors, if it ain't broke - don't fix it! Even if you think you can make it better - DON'T. They're used to it. Oh, my mother? I think she's OK. Maybe. Sort of. I don't know .... but it's her birthday and I want her to enjoy today. (Hey, she even remembered that it was Mindy and Meir's 2nd anniversary - so Happy Anniversary guys!) Have a wonderful weekend - and hey! It's officially summer now, so enjoy the outdoors and the wonderful fruits. (Does your regular, ordinary supermarket carry all those odd, interesting and wonderful fruits you never knew existed when you were growing up? The shapes, the colors! They're just so much fun to look at.) Hugs to all. Eva Rosenberg, EA Your TaxMama is watching ... out for you. P.S. Remember, TaxMama's Secrets is now available on CD. P.S.S.
