Dear EA Exam Candidate

Review Workshop

Several tax professionals, readers of the Ask TaxMama Pro, have asked if I would teach an Enrolled Agent Exam review course.

I'd love to do it. But...

Here's my dilemma. I know that if I commit to helping you with this, it WILL eat up my entire summer. The EA Exam is a grueling exam because it's not about what you know about taxes. It's about how things are worded in the IRS Publications, right or wrong. And the exam, which consists of 4 parts, spans two days and covers a lot of topics.

So, even if I'm not standing in front a classroom, I'll have to do all the homework my students do (review all the prior year questions; understand why the answers are as they are, so I can explain fuzzy logic to students; prepare lesson plans each week and field all your questions).

Having set up the format for the review course at UCLA extension, and having taught this review course for 5 years, I know exactly how intensive it will be for me, to teach it properly.

The students who took my course AND followed my instructions all passed. But it takes a serious committment from the student, too.

Regardless of how many people take the course from me, whether 3 or 50, it will still take a minimum time commitment, on my part, of at least 80-100 hours.

Frankly, that's not something I can afford to do unless the time is compensated. So, here's the proposition:

I'll conduct this workshop via e-mail and live chat sessions if 20 students are willing to pay $500 each for an eight week course. (Plus the cost of materials) You'll get a lot of personal attention - and your questions will be answered.

The course will not offer CPE for CPAs (although I may just be able to swing it...let me work on it.). It will offer 40 hours CPE for EAs if they want it just as a refresher course.

Warning! You must be teamed up with a study buddy (who is also signed up) to be in this course. I have found that when you are studying with someone else, you will not let your buddy down. But studying alone...most people slack off. So, I will not accept anyone into this program who is not studying with a companion.

If twenty people (10 buddy pairs) are interested, please let me know: I want the EA Class!

In case you want a really good study tool that will take you through all of the last three years' exams, and quiz you until you're blue (or have all the questions and correct answers memorized....stand by!

Coming in August, the EA Quizzer developed by your very own TaxMama, Eva Rosenberg, for the good folks at FinancialPrep.com .

You may have used their tools for the CPA exam, or the CFA exam.

Incidentally, they're also coming out with tools for the CMA/CFM exams and the brokers' Series exams.

The reason they're so popular is they've developed such a nifty testing tool!

Live, In-Person Review Courses

I searched the web to find all the links I could to live courses you could attend instead. Besides, some in California, I couldn't find much, mostly just 2-4 day cram/review sessions. And those are only good if you've already done the in-depth studying yourself, beforehand.
But, once you HAVE done your homework, those ARE excellent tools to get you over the final hump.

UCLA - IRS Enrolled Agents Examination Preparation: Comprehensive 12 weeks - $650

NAEA will present a two day course for SEE prep on July 14 and 15, 2003 at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Contact Liz Rivera at NAEA lrivera@naeahq.org

WSEA - Last year, they showed a class that ran 4 Saturdays $450-$500 in Seattle, Washington. I don't see one posted now. Please check with them.

NSALast year, they showed a 3-day Cram - $319-$369 (members price), in Minneapolis, MN, in August. Please contact them for this year's schedule.

So, let's get down to business. If you want TaxMama's class, get your friends interested, and please let me know ASAP! I want the EA Class!

[Note: It's a tough exam. Not a great passage rate. For more details, please see the information at Accounting/Pro2Net]
